USAN Accepting Applications for 2010 Winter and Summer Internship Programs on Capitol Hill

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Azeris Network (USAN) with support from the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA), is pleased to announce its 2010 Winter and Summer Internship Program. Under this Program, USAN/TCA offer three (3) 8-week internships for American students and recent college graduates of Azerbaijani heritage to work at the offices of members of the U.S. Congress in the winter 2009-10 and the summer of 2010.

The internship program will provide an opportunity for Azerbaijani-American students to live and work in Washington DC and become exposed to U.S. governmental bodies and policy-making processes. USAN and TCA, through this program, intend to contribute to the preparation of future Azerbaijani American political leaders, and enhance the participation of the Azerbaijani-American, as well as the whole Turkic-American community, in the American political life.

The 2010 Internship Programs will provide opportunities for prospective interns to meet with House and Senate members and engage in dialogue on matters important to Azerbaijani-American and regional relations. Interns are expected to attend an orientation at the beginning of their internship program and exchange ideas and experiences throughout their stay in Washington D.C. with the program organizers. During this eight-week period, program participants will have the opportunity to attend intellectual, social and cultural events, such as meetings at think-tanks, congressional hearings, Azerbaijani community events, and sightseeing tours of Washington D.C. monuments and museums. In addition, at the conclusion of the program, interns will be expected to present a report evaluating their internship experience and remain generally engaged within the Azerbaijani-American community.

USAN and TCA will sponsor three (3) internships at the congressional offices for two months between December 2009 and August 2010. The internships will entail a monthly stipend of $500 to $1,000, based on the distance of residence of the intern from Washington D.C. area, for a period of two months. Those outside of the Greater DC Area, will be getting the larger amount ($1,000), those in the Greater DC Area will be getting the lower amount. No other costs will be covered by USAN and TCA. It should be also noted that Congressional offices do not pay or cover living costs for their interns. Internship in Congress requires an additional interview and acceptance by the actual congressional office, thus USAN and TCA make no guarantees of placement. A successful candidate would need to put significant effort of their own to make their placement a reality.

Requirements for a fellowship application include:

1. Being a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) of Azerbaijani descent (no exceptions – those on student or tourist visa are, unfortunately, NOT eligible);

2. Being at least a sophomore in a university/college with a GPA of at least 2.0;

3. Excellent communications and writing skills, online contributions and activity a plus;

4. Past interest and experience in community and public service;

How to Apply:

Applicants are required to submit their most recent CV’s together with a one-page cover letter explaining their interest in these fields as well as their expectations from the program.
